Weston’s MP welcomes extra cash to support Ukrainian guests in Weston

Weston’s MP John Penrose has welcomed an extra £360k Government cash to support Ukrainian people being given shelter by local residents in and around Weston-super-Mare.

Many local families opened their doors to Ukrainians fleeing Putin’s invasion but, more than a year later, some of those guests need new places to stay until it is safe for them to go home. The Government funds are a top up to the Homelessness Prevention Grant to make sure local Ukrainian families don’t become homeless if their initial hosts can’t continue to offer shelter anymore.

John said: “Many local people were incredibly generous when Putin invaded Ukraine, offering spare rooms in their homes to Ukrainian families forced to leave their country. But the war is still going and, inevitably, some of those original offers can’t carry on forever. So we need to help our Ukrainian guests find fresh places to stay and work until It’s safe for them to go home. This Government cash should make sure we can keep doing the right thing until then.”
