Polyester Finish Repairs
Polyester is very shiny material that is used on many pianos to give them a high gloss finsh. It is very resistant to most wear and tear, although one drawback is the high gloss polyester is vulnerable to showing any scratches and chips instantly. Polyester is actually harder type of lacquer than French polish; it is easier to build up into a thick coat. Surface scratches you can't feel with your fingernail are fairly easy to sand and polish out. However, deeper scratches the ones can feel with a fingernail usually have to be filled in and polished. Chipped areas also have to be filed and polished..
Generally, the repair can be indistinguishable from the rest of the surrounding Polyester.. However, if you look closely, there might be small imperfections still showing. But you have to look really close and know what you are looking for. This can take the form of a ripple in large grand lids were it has been chipped, Edge chips are normally invisible after the repair
Here are two photos of a grand leg with quite common chip and scratch, one photo is before and one after. This sort of damages is quite often done with a vacuum cleaner or young children with push toys.
