MP Nominates Worle for New Advanced Camera Trial to Banish Noise and Speed

Weston’s MP, John Penrose, has nominated parts of Worle for the planned trial of ‘noise cameras’ across England and Wales later this year.

The cameras automatically detect vehicles that breach the legal noise limit of 72dBA (A-weighted decibels), and forward evidence to the local police for review. This means vehicles speeding, with illegally modified exhausts, or making noise through other means can be caught.

John’s nomination comes following regular reports of car cruises, speeding and antisocial behaviour along the Queensway, North Worle Shopping Centre and surrounding neighbourhoods.

John said: “People living in Worle will know how loud and dangerous driving can be around the Queensway area, especially at night. Since the area was targeted for illegal gatherings during lockdown, we’ve seen a steady increase in those with modified cars using the area to race and ‘show off’ how loud their cars can be, well into the evening. It’s an issue I’ve been working on with the area’s local Councillors for some time, and this could be the answer.

If successful, this bid would make Worle a safer place and help end the late-night revving of engines that local people are becoming all-too familiar with. It’s not guaranteed, but as soon as I heard about the trial, Worle sprung to mind as an area where this technology could really help and I wanted to throw our hat in the ring – keep your fingers crossed!!”
