Below is a copy of the letter John Penrose MP sent to the Managing Director of Great Western Railways:
I’m writing about recent statistics showing a rise in the number of trains arriving significantly late or being cancelled altogether. In January this year you were optimistic that Weston’s rail services were about to improve, with new higher capacity trains and more regular services too. As I said then, our train service is hugely important for local people, especially those commuting to Bristol, who are looking for greener, more comfortable and reliable alternatives to using their cars.
I’m also concerned about the associated rise in customers who’ve had to complain about the service they’re receiving. You’ll know that First Great Western’s new Vision Document says: “we will work with the rail sector to place passengers at the heart of decision-making across the industry to deliver the best possible journey experience for passengers, create new opportunities for our economy and our communities and improve value and efficiency.” To quote just one of the twitter accounts commenting adversely about the service (note none of these got a reply):
@GWRHelp 8.44 Weston Milton to Cardiff cancelled AGAIN, same old. Very annoying you leave it too late for customers to make alternative arrangements? I will be late for work, do you care? Customers are the reason you are employed!
@GWRHelp To top it off the next train is late! What is going on? …
A few days later…
Chaos again tonight! @GWRHelp 16.54 BTM to Taunton & 2 coaches! We’ve gone beyond sardines & onto anchovies now.
At the moment it seems the service is getting worse rather than better, as promised just a few months ago. How are you tackling the problems local commuters are experiencing please?
