Searching for Weston’s next generation of Leaders

Local MP John Penrose has been asked to take part in the British Council’s ‘Future Leaders Connect’ global initiative to find young people across the world who have the potential to be future political leaders or policy makers – and he wants to start searching at home in Weston.

The initiative will provide young people between 18 and 30 with a policy and leadership development programme, where they meet counterparts from other countries, visit some of the world’s most inspirational leaders and gain skills to turn innovative ideas into solid policy recommendations. John has been asked to speak at one of the events in Parliament later this year, addressing participants from around the world.

John said: “Before I got into politics I spent a lot of time yelling at the television, telling leaders they were wrong and needed to do things differently. This initiative equips people who’ve reached the same stage as me with the connections and skills to transform their ideas into realty, so they can change their communities and countries for the better.”

“I bet there are people in Weston, Worle or the villages who would benefit from taking part. So if you’re interested, let me know, or just apply directly to Future Leaders Connect. Let’s find Weston’s next generation of leaders.”

Notes To Editor

Anyone who would like to take part needs to submit an online application through www.britishcouncil.org/future-leaders-connect by 23.59 Thursday 20 July 2017 (BST).

They will be asked what their unique policy ideas are and about their experience as a leader.
