John Penrose wins highest Conservative percentage for 30 years

Conservative MP John Penrose has held his parliamentary seat in Weston-super-Mare winning with 29,982 votes.

Mr Penrose won 53 per cent of the vote in Weston-super-Mare, the highest Tory percentage of the vote there in 34 years.

He took to twitter following his victory to thank people who voted for him in Weston, Worle and the surrounding villages.

Mr Penrose has been the MP for Weston-super-Mare since 2005. He increased his share of the vote this time round by 5 percent over the 25,203 votes he won in the general election.

Labour candidate Tim Taylor came second with 18,438 votes almost double the number he received in the last election. He increased his share of the vote by over 14 per cent to 32.7 per cent.

Mr Penrose used his victory speech to thank people who voted for him and reiterate that he would be working to support the community.

The Weston, Worle and Somerset Mercury report that Mr Penrose said: “I now promise to do my absolute best to stick up for everybody here, no matter who they voted for.”

Labour’s Mr Taylor said he was pleased with the increase in vote share and shaving, 4,000 of the 2015 conservative majority.

The Liberal Democrats came third with MP 5,175 votes for candidate Mike Bell. UKIP came in fourth with 1,932 – 14 per cent down on their 2015 result.

Turnout in the Weston-super-Mare constituency was up three per cent on 2015 at 68.8 per cent.
