Following news that the Great Western Mainline train franchise may be extended for another two years whilst the Transport Department reviews the franchising process, local MP John Penrose has written to the Trains Minister, Simon Burns, asking him to confirm that his earlier promise to keep the direct services between London and Weston will still be honoured when the new process gets underway.
John said: “When the Minister promised that the direct services to London would be maintained under the new franchise agreement last Autumn, I was delighted. But then the West Coast Mainline franchise problems erupted and, understandably, the Transport Department decided to suspend the franchise process while they sorted things out.
“Of course, it’s absolutely right that Ministers take more time to make sure we have a robust process for future franchise agreements, but I want to make sure our direct services will still be safe when bidding for the new franchise eventually resumes. So I’ve written to the Minister reminding him of his promise, to make sure it doesn’t get forgotten when things get back underway.”
