Weston, The perfect location for British Industry says MP

E-mail Print

Weston's MP John Penrose has welcomed a Confederation of British Industry (CBI) report on the ingredients needed for successful businesses to flourish, because they coincide exactly with what Weston has to offer.

The CBI report says the driving force of productivity is a workforce with good education and skills, including Apprenticeships and on the job training as well as GCSEs or A-Levels, followed by good transport connections. The number of highly-skilled people in Weston’s local workforce has increased dramatically in recent years with the expansion of Weston College, which was recently awarded University Centre status, and transport connections have also improved as the M5 junction 21 and local train services have both seen significant investments to improve capacity.

John said: "The CBIs report underlines why Weston and the nearby villages are creating new jobs and attracting new firms faster than most of the rest of the southwest. Their summary of what British Industry is looking matches what I and others have been saying about Weston for several years now. It shows we’re heading in the right direction.

Our biggest weakness is innovation, where less than £1 sales in every £20 comes from new products compared to £1 in every £7 from the South East or Wales. That’s where the new town centre creative hub, and the food and drink innovation centre, should both help us catch up.
