In this week's column for the Weston Mercury, John talks about fairness and the importance of the newly introduced 'English Votes for English Laws' that was one of John's election pledges to Westonians prior to May's election.


Electoral register reform brought forward to improve accuracy

John has announced that the deadline for the switchover to a new system of electoral registration has been brought forward by the Government in order to put an end to the delays that are compromising the register's integrity. He also revealed that an extra £3 million will be made available to areas where electoral registration is lowest to encourage people to have their say in upcoming elections.


John Meets With British Youth Council

John Penrose has met with the British Youth Council to discuss methods of improving voter registration and turnout amongst young people.


John's Department release guide to English Votes for English Laws

One of John's election pledges was to fight for English Votes for English Laws. His department has released a Policy paper on the proposed changes to the laws that mean English MPs cannot vote on matters which have been devolved to other parts of the UK, but Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland MPs can vote on those same matters when the UK Parliament is legislating solely for England.


John and Cabinet Office to share skills and expertise with Carers UK

John and his team at the Cabinet Office have chosen Carers UK as their charity of the year. Over the course of the next year, the Cabinet Office will work in partnership with the charity by sharing their professional skills and expertise, conducting department-wide fundraising activities and volunteering their own time to support Carers UK.
